Welcome!

Welcome to the Summit High School Book Study of the book "SPARK: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain" by the HPHPE Department. In future blogs we will recount the timeline for the Book Study as well as specific conditions that we as a group, and individuals, will need to accomplish.

During this introductory post I think it would be beneficial to identify ourselves, the department we represent, and our ultimate goal/objective we would hope to attain by participating in this book study. Let me go first...

Colton St. Peter - Human Performance, Health, & Physical Education - I'd like to incorporate specific physical activities in my everyday PE lessons that allow all students to increase their cognitive capacity in order to facilitate learning in all areas.

How about you all give it a go...and if you'd like a little extra reading, check out the study below.

"The effects of a 2 year health-related school physical education program on standardized academic achievement scores was assessed in 759 children who completed Metropolitan Achievement Tests before and after the program. Schools were randomly assigned to conditions: ( a) Specialists taught the Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids curriculum; (b) classroom teachers were trained to implement the curriculum, and ( c) controls continued their usual programs. The Trained Teacher condition was superior to Control on Language, Reading, and Basic Battery. The Specialist condition was superior to Control on Reading, but inferior on Language. Despite devoting twice as many minutes per week to physical education as Controls, the health-related physical education program did not interfere with academic achievement. Health-related physical education may have favorable effects on students' academic achievement."

  1. I think it is really important to incorporate exercise whenever possible. At SHS with 90 minute period we should be doing exercise breaks in all of our classes. My goal is to have my students up and moving every 30 minutes at least.

  2. That's an excellent way to wake them up. In PE I've done a moving study guide the class before a test and reviewed all the answers in the ending part of the class rather than getting up for a minute activity. Let's them move a bit more and for longer, while still studying their material.

  3. Introduction: I do believe we are slowly killing ourselves with horrible nutrition and lack of exercise. The intro to SPARK says it perfectly. 65% of adults in the US are overweight. 10% of the entire population has type 2 diabetes "we are literally killing ourselves". The greatest news is that we can fix it! We can help ourselves MENTALLY for free - exercise!

  4. Chapter 1: Welcome to the Revolution! This experiment proved to be very effective. Reading comprehension increased by 17%! I think we should have a "zero hour" at SHS and conduct the experiment. It would be interesting to see how our students grow after exercising before school.

  5. The book is interesting stating that students spend an average of 5.5 hours a day in front of a screen - this has definitely gone up since 2008. Physical activity is SO important for the brain. It would be great if during each 85 minute class teachers did a 5-10 minute physical activity. This would help all students and by the end of the day, at least they would always have 30 minutes of exercise in. I bet our scores would go up.
